The Apartment (AFI #93)
The Affairs of Others #1
"The best non-masterpiece of American cinema."
The above quote on THE APARTMENT comes from critic Mark Cousins and NOT the fine gentlemen of OFF SCREEN DEATH. No, we were too busy making fun of Jack Lemmon for trying on that silly hat. But we did learn how to strain spaghetti.
Initially divisive (The Saturday Review called it "a dirty fairy tale") it did go on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1960 but has never climbed the lists like some of Billy Wilder's other films like SUNSET BOULEVARD (#12 on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies) and SOME LIKE IT HOT (#14). However today it receives the honor of being the first selection for a podcast that likely no one is listening to.
Justice is served. Enjoy!
